Dialogue Through Art
Fractured Selves: Realism, Surrealism, and the Unconscious
My practice explores the tension between perceived reality and surreal transformation. Realistic portraiture functions as both subject and analytical tool. The body becomes a site for examining pain, identity, and psychic fragmentation, while symbolic and mystical elements introduce layers of psychoanalytic resonance. What remains of the self when the body becomes a mirror for inner conflict? By juxtaposing technical discipline with irrational or dreamlike interventions, the work investigates the tension between conscious control and unconscious impulse. Can precision contain what resists language, or does the unconscious inevitably disturb every attempt at order?
Exhibiting internationally has extended this inquiry beyond the studio into intercultural dialogue. Presenting my work in diverse contexts has revealed how autobiographical and psychological imagery can generate broader collective interpretations. How can an intensely personal image become recognisable to someone shaped by a different history and culture? Encounters with artists in India and Egypt have further informed my understanding of global art practices, particularly the resilience and determination that sustain creative production across differing social and cultural conditions. What allows artistic practice to endure in the face of uncertainty, limitation, or social pressure?
Through this synthesis of realism and psychological symbolism, my work aims to position individual experience within a wider transnational and theoretical framework. Rather than resolving the relationship between reality and imagination, the work asks whether identity is ever singular, or always suspended between memory, desire, and transformation.
